The charming 2D action-adventure series Wonder Boy/Monster World is getting a new installment next year for PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. Developed by Studio Art Dink, Wonder Boy – Asha in Monster World is a full remake of the 1994 original classic Monster World IV.
Published by ININ Games, Wonder Boy – Asha in Monster World will see a formal reveal later this week on August 29th during the Awesome Indies Showcase of this year’s Gamescom digital event. We expect to see a first trailer and screenshots then.
This is a monster world. The protagonist, Asha, who has just become a warrior, is involved in a serious case involving the fate of the kingdom. 4 spirits were trapped by the invaders who were plotting to make this world theirs. Asha, who received the order to rescue the spirits from Princess Purapil, goes on an adventure with the mysterious creature Pepelogoo that she met in the King’s capital Rapadanga. Together with Pepelogoo, Aisha overcomes various difficulties. Can these two people save the world?
But today we already learn a lot about the title. For one, it’s a remake of the Japan-exclusive Monster World IV. As such, it will feature similar characters and story albeit in a much improved new packaging. Not only that, but original developers who worked on the game are returning for the project which ought to be great news in keeping the tone and atmosphere of the remake.
The Wonder Boy/Monster World franchise has experienced an unexpected revival in the past years thanks to the excellent Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap & Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. Seeing how these two prior games panned out, there’s enough reason to be confident that Wonder Boy – Asha in Monster World will also deliver a great classic 2D action-adventure experience in the same vein.
The game is slated to release sometime in early 2021. Stay tuned for the upcoming Gamescom event to learn more.
