Having wrapped up another fabulous WonderCon, the weekend filled with exciting announcements, movie screenings, and cosplay ended on a bit of a surprising note — the convention will not be returning to Anaheim next year.
Instead, WonderCon is moving to Los Angeles where it will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center — the same location as the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) video games trade show.
“Los Angeles is honored to have been selected as the destination for WonderCon 2016. We look forward to establishing a long-term partnership with Comic-Con International, the presenter, and helping them establish a home-base in L.A.,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement. “We anticipate the show to be highly attended and to set the precedent for future successful Comic-Con events in L.A.” WonderCon is projected to generate more than $32 million for the Los Angeles economy over the three-day period.
It appears the move is due to the upcoming construction at the Anaheim Convention Center which is expected to break ground in October. WonderCon's contract with Los Angeles is only for 2016, so it's possible the convention could return to Anaheim once construction is finished, but the door for Los Angeles to play regular host has now been open.
Of course, it's possible the convention could move somewhere else entirely like, say, Florida. Hey, at least we have water.
Nerdist reports that next year's WonderCon will be held on March 25-27, 2016.
