World of Tanks will not get a sequel, developer says it “doesn’t really make sense”

More and more developers appear to be jumping on the idea of avoiding the commitment of producing a sequel that is more or less the same thing as its predecessor and instead looking to monetize that which they've already released. It seems like we can count World of Tanks developer Wargaming among them as they revealed to Gamespot at PAX Aus that they have no plans to make a second World of Tanks game.

"World of Tanks 2? No," said regional publishing director Alex de Giorgio. "It's this constant evolution; that's been the hallmark of the game."

He added that considering everything, making a sequel "doesn't really make sense to us."

And who can blame them? World of Tanks is a free to play game with an incredibly large online player base. So it doesn't make sense to force that player base to eventually migrate to a new game, especially when they have no issues creating microtransaction content that players feel is worth purchasing. Plus, there's something to be said for a single game that has the kind of staying power that World of Tanks does, with its pro circuit competitions, devotedly hardcore player base, and consistent influx of capital.

The times are definitely changing, so expect this kind of thing to be a big part of gaming's future.
