World of Warcraft’s next expansion, Legion, announced

With World of Warcraft's subscriptions dropping to an all-time low, today's announcement of the long-standing MMO's next expansion couldn't come at a better time. Revealed today at Gamescom, the new expansion is called Legion.

"In this dire new chapter of the World of Warcraft saga, the great enemy of the Horde and the Alliance—the demonic Burning Legion—has returned. As destruction rains across Azeroth, its heroes must seek salvation among the ruins of the mythic Broken Isles, ancient seat of a lost night elf civilization—and site of the accursed Tomb of Sargeras, which now serves as a gateway to endless Legion worlds."

The expansion introduces the the new Demon Hunter character class, an Elven outcast shunned for daring to wield the terrible powers of the Legion.

"In this dire new chapter of the World of Warcraft saga, the great enemy of the Horde and the Alliance—the demonic Burning Legion—has returned. As destruction rains across Azeroth, its heroes must seek salvation among the ruins of the mythic Broken Isles, ancient seat of a lost night elf civilization—and site of the accursed Tomb of Sargeras, which now serves as a gateway to endless Legion worlds," the class description reads.

The combat the Burning Legion, you'll now be able to wield Artifacts, class-specific, highly-customizable weapons of unimaginable power. Your weapon will grow in power as you do, with your personal choices changing the Artifact's abilities, looks, sounds, and ultimate feel in combat.

While these are probably the two biggest highlights of Legion, the expansion will also raise the character level max to 110, introduces a new PvP Honor system, and challenge players with new Dungeons and Raids.

World of Warcraft: Legion doesn't yet have a launch date, but you are able to sign up for its beta.
