World of Warcraft turns 9 years old

Today Blizzard Entertainment posted a message to its community celebrating a full nine years of World of Warcraft, its famous massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

"While the war between the Alliance and the Horde continues to drive the races of Azeroth apart, the bonds outside of the game continue to strengthen and grow," the team wrote.

"We’re humbled by the stories you’ve shared about how World of Warcraft has affected your lives. We’ve celebrated marriages and births with your guildmates and PvP rivals, mourned alongside you at the loss of community members and friends, and gathered together at places like BlizzCon to swap stories face-to-face — all reminding us that World of Warcraft is more than just a game."

World of Warcraft actually launched on Nov. 23, 2004 (the 10th anniversary of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, the real-time strategy game that started the series), but it makes sense to post the news on a weekday — and, coincidentally, the day of the Xbox One's launch. Not everything is about the next-gen consoles, right?
