Worms Rumble squirms the iconic franchise into real-time action mayhem

Team17 has unveiled a massive deviation in their long-standing strategy-action series Worms by bringing it into the real-time shooter realm. Worms Rumble is a multiplayer 2.5D action shooter in the battle royale genre and is targeting to come out sometime this year for the PC, PS4, and PS5 with cross-play support. Check out the announcement trailer here!

The Worms franchise is one of the most seasoned series out there in gaming. Ever since its inception over 25 years ago, the cutesy strategy-action games have proven a winning formula as party games either locally or online. But gaming sentiments have changed drastically in the last decades and what was once a popular series is now all but forgotten.

The question is, how do you resuscitate an IP like this? Going for modern trends is the answer of Team17 who has decided to create an online battle royale action game in the series with Worms Rumble. It’s a crass departure from the series’ signature gameplay and fans have made their voices on the new direction be heard loud and clear by heavily downvoting the reveal trailer linked above.

Worms goes real-time: Every round is in REAL TIME. When enemies rain down fire, unleash wormageddon right back!

Up-to-32-player, cross-platform multiplayer: Play across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC, with Deathmatch and Last Worm Standing solo and squad Battle Royale modes available at launch.

Classic Weapons/New Ways to Play: Arm Worms with new and returning fan-favourite weapons!

Events, Challenges and ‘The Lab’: Take part in seasonal events, daily and community challenges, and experiment with new gameplay mechanics and weapons in ‘The Lab’.

Player Customisations: Earn XP and in-game currency to unlock and purchase weapon skins, outfits, accessories and emotes. Players create their personal style for the battlefield.

In the end, it’s the developer’s decision to keep the Worms IP alive and kicking, and if it’s going another route is what it takes maybe it’s not the worst way to go. The final product does look to have an upfront battle ahead where it has to not only win new fans but also convince existing fans.

Team17’s action-focused spin-off comes hot of the heels of the surprise sequel success Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. So, there is good reason to be optimistic about Worms Rumble still. No matter how much the battle royale genre might be over-represented these days.
