X-Men spinoff film, The New Mutants, finds its director

Josh Boone, director of the Fault in Our Stars, has made a deal with Fox to act as director and co-writer for an X-Men spinoff movie called The New Mutants. The series will bring an entirely new set of mutants into the spotlight.

The New Mutants will be pulling from Marvel's New Mutant comic series that began in 1982 (random information: it helped introduce Deadpool to comics). The comics focus on teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training. Oddly enough, this falls in line with X-Men: Apocalypse bringing in younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm (even the new Spider-Man film is going younger).

The original New Mutant team consists of Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane – Whether or the Apocalypse will be features hasn't been mentioned, but they aren't spotlighted later on in the comic series.

Boone will be co-writing with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg, the producer of the X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocolypse will act as producer along with Lauren Shuler Donner who was the producer with Kinberg in the X-Men films. Kinberg stepped out to speak on the subject of Boone acting as director saying, “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
