Despite a rocky 2011 for game sales, consoles seemed to be flying off store shelves, and none more than the Xbox 360. Microsoft's system sat atop the NPD's monthly sales chart throughout the entire year, and according to GeekWire.com, it surpassed the PS3 and Wii in yearly sales for the first time in its history.
The Xbox 360′s enormous holiday quarter of 8.2 million units sold put the Microsoft console ahead in worldwide sales globally for the full year of 2011. The console reached 14.9 million units sold in 2011, compared with 14.1 million for the PS3 and 10.33 million for the Wii. The report also pointed out that the PS3 and Wii lagged substantially behind the Xbox 360 during the holiday quarter, selling 6.5 and 5.6 million units respectively.
According to GeekWire's historical data, the yearly sales marked the first time in which the Microsoft console surpassed both the PS3 and Wii. It's hard to put a finger on just why so many folks are jumping out and buying 360s, but the expansion of Kinect games and a more all-around entertainment approach definitely didn't hurt its sales.
