Xbox One and PS4 game releases for February 2014

After an extremely slow (and painfully long) January, the video game releases are starting to pick up — just not the for Xbox One or PS4. Last month, the PS4 just saw two new games released; the Xbox One just one. Things appear to be looking up this month, however. Below are the new Xbox One and PS4 games coming in February 2014.

Outlast – PS4 – February 5, 2014

Outlast is February's free PlayStation Plus game for the PS4. As such, it'll presumably arrive alongside the PS Store update on February 5th — at least based on the latest PlayStation Blogcast. Though the game has been available on PC for a while, it's making its console debut on PS4 where it'll likely terrify millions more gamers. Seriously, this game is ridiculously scary first-person survival horror game. In it, you play as investigative journalist Miles Upshur as he discovers a terrible secret at Mount Massive Asylum. I've only played a portion of this game, but I'm definitely looking forward to it on PS4. Here are the other free PS Plus games for the month.

The Lego Movie Videogame – Xbox One, PS4 – February 7, 2014

Based on Warner Bros. upcoming film, The LEGO Movie Videogame is more of TT Games giving us what we love — LEGO. The game's plot draws fromt he film, revolving around a perfectly average minifigure named Emmet who is tasked with saving the world even though we already have heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman around. There are supposedly more than 90 characters inspired by the film and 15 levels. If you've played TT Games' past LEGO games, odds are you'll enjoy this.

Rayman Legends – Xbox One, PS4 – February 18, 2014

Another game previously released on last-gen consoles, Rayman Legends on Xbox One and PS4 will include new unlockable characters; however, depending on your platform, the characters offered will differ. Both systems will also have special platform-specific additions. For example, Xbox One will have 10 exclusive challenges; PS4 will get a Camera Mod ethat allows you to share pictures you take using the DualShock 4 touchpad and built-in share functionality. On last-gen systems, Rayman Legends scored a perfect 10/10 here on GameZone. I'm guessing it'll be a solid play on Xbox One and PS4 as well.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare – Xbox One – February 25, 2014

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is a multiplayer shooter spinoff of PopCap Games' wonderfully addictive tower defense game. It offers more than 10 maps and three distinct game modes, including two 12v12 competitive multiplayer modes. Additionally, i thas a four player co-operative mode in which plants must defend the garden bases from zombies attempting to turn them into graveyards. On Xbox One, there are two extra modes including local cooperative split screen andBoss Mode, the latter of which can be used with Kinect or SmartGlass.

Thief – Xbox One, PS4 – February 25, 2014

Perhaps the only "real" next-gen title of the month, Thief is a reinvention of the franchise that helped define an entire genre of games. In the game, you control Garrett, a master thief who relies on the cover of shadows to steal from the rich. Though, gameplay is choice-driven — with a number of possible paths and approaches — stealth will always be your best option. To aid you, Thief introduces "focus," an optional new mode that speeds up Garrett's reaction times and giving the player an edge over the surroundings. As someone who never played any of the older games, I'm approaching Thief with a fresh set of eyes and open mind. Are you?

Not a bad lineup of games considering we're only in February. Things will certainly pick up in the coming months, but I think there's enough here to hold over early Xbox One and PS4 adopters. Which games are you most looking forward to in February?
