Xbox One controller update to cut connection time in half

Microsoft is bringing an update to the Xbox One controller that promises to bring more stability and faster connection between your system and controller.

The update has no official release date, but Xbox One Preview Program members are actually able to download it now.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's Major Nelson has posted details on the changes that will be implemented. Previously, Xbox One controllers would take anywhere between 4 – 5 seconds to connect to the console when powering on. After the update the connection should only take about 2 seconds. Impatient gamers everywhere will be pleased. The stability aspect of the update will provide fixes to issues that were submitted by Xbox One owners and update preview participants.

Here's how to update your controller firmware if you are an Xbox Preview Program member:

  • Connect a controller to your Xbox One with a USB cable.  Keep any headsets connected to the controller.
  • Connect to Xbox Live.
  • Press the Menu
  • Go to Settings > Devices & accessories.  Select the controller.
    • If you have multiple controllers attached, you can select Buzz – which will cause the selected controller to vibrate.
  • Then select Update to download the new firmware to the controller attached via the USB cable, and the screen will show the Updating controller … progress screen
  • When you see the Controller updated screen, press ‘B’ to go back to the Devices & accessories main page
  • Reselect the controller, the Firmware version, should now be: 1.2.2236.0
