Xbox One’s Twitch streaming breaks records

What's this, real news on April Fool's Day? Microsoft revealed today that nearly 23 million minutes have been spent broadcasting from Twitch on Xbox One since the app's launch on March 10. This includes more than 2.7 million minutes broadcast from the system between March 10 and March 11, the most ever for a Twitch console app in its first day. Additionally, 30 percent of all Twitch unique broadcasters were doing so from the Xbox One during the app's first day.

"In its first week, 108,000 unique Twitch users tried their hand at broadcasting from Xbox One, accounting for 22 percent of Twitch’s unique broadcasters in the same period of time. To put that in perspective, according to Twitch, it took another console a month to achieve what the Twitch app on Xbox One did within its first week," Microsoft said, clearly targeting the PlayStation 4's Twitch numbers. "New broadcasters are really getting into it, too, as the average Twitch broadcast on Xbox One is nearly as long as the average American TV sitcom at 28 minutes."

Twitch also revealed that Xbox One's multiplayer shooter Titanfall is the most broadcasted game on Twitch on Xbox One. More than 10 million minutes of the game has been streamed from the Xbox One to date.

“We have always considered enabling live streaming directly from consoles to be a key step in unlocking the ability for all gamers to share their experiences,” added Twitch CEO Emmett Shear. “Yet we never imagined the popularity would spread as fast as it has. Microsoft has really helped drive this expansion, and the great system architecture of Xbox One has allowed us to build a really great broadcasting experience with a robust feature set. We’re all very excited about working with Microsoft to continue rolling out new features on the platform.”

In January, Sony revealed that more than 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts had been streamed for the PS4 via Twitch and Ustream, totaling more than 55 million minutes. At the time, Twitch had revealed 20 percent of all of their broadcasters were PS4 owners.
