Xbox One vs PS4 sales: ‘a marathon, not a sprint,’ Microsoft says

If the last generation of consoles taught us anything, it's that slow and steady wins the race. The PlayStation 4 may have gotten off to a hot start, already selling over 6 million units, but MIcrosoft's Phil Harrison insists it's far too early to draw any conclusions about the next-gen battle.

"We’re 120 days into our platform lifecycle. You know better than anyone that this is a marathon, not a sprint," Microsoft's corporate VP of Europe told Venturebeat.

"We’re happy with our plan. We’re happy with the performances of our key franchises and key partnerships, most notably Titanfall in the last couple of weeks," he said. Titanfall, which release last week has been an incredible success for the Xbox One, especially in the UK where Xbox One sales increased 96 percent following the game's launch. Though I'm sure £30 price cut didn't hurt either.

It's been a while since Microsoft last revealed worldwide sales numbers for its new console, but back in January the company announced that the Xbox One had sold over 3 million consoles in 2013 with over 3.9 million units shipped. Comparitively, Sony revealed earlier this month that over 6 million PS4 systems have been sold since launch. It's worth pointing out, however, that the Xbox One launched in considerably less markets than the PS4. Microsoft confirmed this week at GDC that, in September, the Xbox One will release in 26 more markets.
