Ever since Disney announced that they would be making spin-off movies in between the main line Star Wars movie, fans have begged for a solo Obi-Wan flick set before A New Hope and after Revenge of the Sith. Fans also hoped that Ewan McGregor would return as he'd be the right age for the part and he was one of the few things that was universally liked about the prequels.
McGregor has expressed interest in returning to Star Wars several times and he even recorded a few lines for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now, it sounds like that solo Obi-Wan flick is finally happening. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the movie is in the very early stages of development meaning it has no cast, crew, or script quite yet.
Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry is currently in talks with Lucasfilm and if he signs on, he shall helm the production of the picture. There's no word on if McGregor has signed on to the project yet but we would have to assume that if this project does move forward, he'll jump on board fairly quickly given his enthusiasm.
Lucasfilm and Disney revealed earlier this year that they'd decide the third spin-off film by June and well… it's August. Obviously, they probably got distracted by the production of the Han Solo movie which was faced with disaster when both of the directors were fired and Ron Howard was brought in to reshoot a large portion of the movie.
With all that said, it wouldn't be surprising if we heard news regarding the film in the coming weeks. Hopefully, everything works out and we can get that Obi-Wan Kenobi movie we've all been craving.
The movie likely won't release until 2020 but fans will have plenty of Star Wars to tide them over until then. The next Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, hits theaters on December 15th, 2018.
