Developer Playtonic Games will be collaborating with indie games label Team 17 for the production of Yooka-Laylee, the studio announced today.
After raising roughly $3 million via Kickstarter, shattering even its loftiest stretch goals, Yooka-Laylee had more than the necessary funding. Playtonic chose to partner with Team 17 despite this in order to smooth over the nuts and bolts of Yooka-Laylee’s development.
QA, localization and translation, publication, certification and other “stuff that game creators don’t want to worry about” will be handled by Team 17 going forward, Playtonic Creative Lead Gavin Price wrote on the studio’s blog. As a result, the team will be free to double down on design. This will invariably benefit backers by way of a more polished game, Gavin added.
Playtonic insists that Team 17’s support will not compromise their vision, calling their arrangement a unique partnership born of mutual understanding. Its benefits are already clear: for starters, Yooka-Laylee will be available in more languages.
Team 17 is best known for its work on the longstanding Worms franchise, but has a wealth of titles under its belt. More recently, the studio picked up Beyond Eyes, the visually striking adventure game by Tiger & Squid shown at E3 2015.
