Zeboyd Games launches Kickstarter for Cosmic Star Heroine

Zeboyd Games launched a Kickstarter today for its upcoming turn-based sci-fi role-playing game Cosmic Star Heroine.

The developer of the last two Penny Arcade Adventures titles and Cthulhu Saves the World first announced Cosmic Star Heroine back in June. It's asking for a modest $100,000 and has raised over $30,000 so far.

Cosmic Star Heroine is inspired by classic RPGs like Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, and Suikoden, and it's coming to PlayStation 4, PS Vita, PC, and Mac. The story follows Alyssa L’Salle, a top government agent who uncovers a dark conspiracy and is outed as a spy.

The game features a save-anywhere feature, several difficulty settings, and minimal grinding ("unless you want to," says Zeboyd). Battles take place in-dungeon, not on a separate screen. Parties can hold four characters at one time.

Zeboyd expects a December 2014 fulfillment date. If overfunded, the developer will continue to polish the game and bring on additional help and increase the audio budget without pushing back this projection. It will also use the money to fund downloadable content — but that's about it. No stretch goals are planned.

"We don't know about you, but we hate it when Kickstarters get a lot more money than they expected, drastically increase the scope of the game, and end up pushing the release date back months or even years," the main campaign page reads. "What's worse, some of these Kickstarters drastically underestimate how much all those new features are going to end up costing with the result that they end up running out of money before they manage to fulfill all of their promises.

"We don't want this to happen to us!"

The campaign for Cosmic Star Heroine ends October 31.
