Closing out today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime took to the spotlight to introduce a brand new game for the 3DS. Nintendo is developing a new 3DS title that takes place in the world of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Don't worry if you don't remember it, it was released more than 20 years ago on Super NES.
Nintendo's developers are looking to "reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume using the three-dimensional display of the 3DS," Reggie explained. "With it, it's easier to differentiate levels in the environment. And our developers can utilize height differences in dungeons as a puzzle solving mechanic."
Another mechanic that will be utilized is Link's ability to become a 2D drawing and move within walls. By moving within the walls, your viewpoint changes and you can see the connections within an area that you might not have seen before. This mechanic will play a "key role" in solving puzzles in the game.
Although this new Zelda game is set in the world of A Link to the Past, it will feature an original storyline and all-new dungeons. Interestingly, Reggie made it a point not to call it a direct sequel. The new 3DS Zelda game, which doesn't yet have a title in the West, will be released this holiday season.
