Zendaya basically confirms she won’t be playing Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Speculation has been rampant over who former Disney star Zendaya will be playing in Spider-Man: Homecoming and according to rumors, she may be playing the iconic red head, Mary Jane Watson. Kirsten Dunst took on the role of the girl next door in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and some thought she played the role well while some felt she fell a bit flat. Most fans can agree she looked the part, at least in the first movie, as a white female with red hair.

Zendaya has none of the character's features as she is black and doesn't have red hair so of course, the internet flipped out. Even though it hasn't been confirmed and the rumor didn't sound very reputable, people believe that she is Mary Jane. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she sort of kills the rumor by describing a character completely unlike Mary Jane.

"My character is not romantic," she said. "My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual, and because she's so smart, she just feels like she doesn't need to talk to people, like, 'My brain is so far ahead of you that you're just not really on my level.' So she comes off very weird.

"But to me, she is very cool because she's deep," Zendaya continued. "She's always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don't really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out."

Sounds very little like the Mary Jane we know, right? Zendaya also spoke out about watching people react to the rumor and had a little shade to throw towards those fans who said some mean things about her and the movie.

"People are going to react over anything. But nothing [about who I'm playing] is fact," she said. "It's funny to watch the guessing game. But of course there's going to be outrage over that because for some reason some people just aren't ready.

"I'm like, 'I don't know what America you live in, but from what I see when I walk outside my streets of New York right now, I see lots of diversity and I see the real world and it's beautiful, and that's what should be reflected and that's what is reflected so you're just going to have to get over it.'"

Zendaya's role in Spider-Man is only known as "Michelle" right now and that's basically it. The director, Jon Watts, has confirmed that that is her name but some people think he may be lying to hide the fact she is someone else.

Tom Holland also recently spoke in an interview and confirmed that Spider-Man will throw no punches in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
