Are you one of those people that wait until last minute to figure out their Halloween costume? Shame on you. Plan ahead, would ya? No one appreciates a hobo costume anymore, or a white sheet draped over you pretending to be a ghost. Put some effort into it! You might as well go as something video game related, too, seeing as we are on a gaming site. Tons of great games have released this year that could make for a great video game Halloween costume, and there’s more coming in the future that could show that you’re up with the latest gaming trends. So here are some ideas, but first some ground rules…
Ladies, don’t go as sexy Lara Croft, or sexy Mario, or sexy Nathan Drake, or sexy Link. Less clothing doesn’t make something sexy. Gender-bending is fine, but don’t have your whole butt or chest hanging out.
Guys, the same goes for you. I don’t want to see your Boo Berries.
Don’t buy a costume from Party City or any of those chain Halloween stores. Put it together yourself. Get your hands dirty. Those costumes just look cheap.
And with those, here we go! And remember, if you don’t have the skills of a really good cosplayer, there’s cheap, easy alternatives for these!
There’s a new Persona on the way, but 2014 has been all about Persona 4 Golden for the GameZone staff. Who better to dress up as than Chie? That iconic green and yellow-striped jacket is something that’d be fun to wear all year long, so now you have an excuse to make one or buy one. If you decide to make it, here are some pretty good instructions to help. If not, you can find her jacket to buy online. And you don't have to wear the tiny black skirt, jeans will do just fine.
I like Phil Spencer. The head of Microsoft’s Xbox Division is personable, and I feel that Xbox finally has someone running the show that knows what he’s talking about. So here’s how you dress as Phil Spencer for Halloween. Part your hair like him, wear a Crackdown or State of Decay t-shirt, and wear a Blazer over it. Then just go solve all of Microsoft’s Xbox problems. Simple.
Not everyone loved inFamous: Second Son. That’s okay. They can’t deny that the game was visually appealing. That said, the main character, Delsin Rowe has a pretty cool look, regardless of whether you liked him or hated him. His outfit is easily put together for both men and women, and just requires a jean jacket, black hoodie, maroon beanie, some pins and some fake tats if you don’t have real ones.
Wii Fit U has been out for a good while now. But the Wii Fit trainer is just getting started. She is ready to downward dog everyone into the loser column when she comes to Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U. The costume is pretty basic, too. Black yoga pants, blue tank top (maybe with Wii Fit on it), paint your skin white and use whatever method you want to make your hair gray.
Another character ready to terrorize fighters in Super Smash Bros., the Villager from Animal Crossing is harmless and cute, and yet he’s always carrying around an axe. Shorts and a red shirt is most of the costume. As for the head, you can make one to wear and decorate it, or you can do your make-up to mimic the look of the Villager’s eyes, nose and mouth.
The new villain of Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4, the look of Pagan Min is outlandish, over-the-top, gawdy, and instantly recognizable. If you can commit to the hairstyle, more props to you. You’ll need to shave it in some areas, while bleaching the top, but ya know, dedication. Make your way through thrift shops and you’ll probably be able to find a blazer and pants that are pink. Then just act creepy, crazy, violent, and bipolar while snapping selfies with your camera and you’ll be set. And don’t forget to carry around a pen or pencil, for emergencies.
Destiny is an addicting and controversial game that no one can agree on when you ask if the game is good. That said, Guardians in the game look awesome, and there’s been some amazing cosplay done. But I’m not expecting you all to weld together your own costumes. Using some creativity, you can find items that you could paint or rig together to make yourself look like a budget Guardian. Get a Nerf gun, gas mask, motorcycle helmet or goggles, a cloak of some sort, some armor-looking items to wear, paint them all and put a symbol on them and you’re set.
Ah, the Cryptarch from Destiny. I thought of this one and would’ve actually dressed up as him this Halloween if I didn’t already have a costume. But for this, paint your face blue, wear a hood, scarf and a robe (as close to the colors he wears as possible). If you can sew, add some of the embellishment he has on his robes. Then, when you get to the party, have everyone take a purple square that they can redeem with you for a prize. When they go to you throughout the night, take the purple square and give them a new square with a green weapon drawn on it. Watch rage ensue.
This is a pretty simple costume without too much work. You can wear pretty much whatever you want, or nothing at all. I’ve seen people make themselves look pixelated and blurry in their private areas, if you feel like doing that. Anyone, once you figure out what you want to wear, make a plumbob, which you can find directions online on how to make one in various ways.
Another Super Smash Bros. character that’s not hard to dress up as at all. After styling your hair like Little Mac, you simply need to wear green shorts, a black tank top, and purchase green boxing gloves. Simple, right?
