5 PS4 games to play during the summer drought

Ah summer time. No school means you probably have lots of time on your hands. Unfortunately, this freedom comes during a time when very few video games actually release. As evident by July’s list of PS4 game releases, there’s not much going on this summer. Sure, there’s The Last of Us: Remastered — and going to be amazing — but we’re talking about weeks worth of gaming time. So take my advice and start playing through the backlog of games you might have collected since the PS4’s release in November. Here are five PS4 games I recommend playing during the summer drought.

Resogun

Believed by many to be the best PS4 game available at the system’s launch in November (well, by me at least), Resogun is an intense fast-paced shoot em’ up from Housemarque. In the game, you must rescue the last survivors from a distant galactic colonies that are under ruthless attack from an evil alien invasion. Diverse weapons, big explosions, tons of pixels, and vibrant colors, Resogun has the feel of an old-school Arcade game, but with full HD, 60 frames per second. What’s more, Housemarque just released the game’s first expansion, Resogun: Heroes.

inFamous Second Son

Looking for that big summer blockbuster? This is it. InFamous: Second Son is the epitome of a next-gen title, featuring stunning graphics and action-packed gameplay. I consider it to be the first truly “next-gen” experience on the PS4. Even though Second Son is the third game in the inFamous series, it’s completely welcoming to newcomers. The game sees you play as Delsin Rowe, a Seattle resident who just discovered his superhuman powers and now capable of fighting back against the oppressive Department of Unified Protection.

Transistor

From the creators of Bastion, comes Transistor, a sci-fi themed action RPG that invites you to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin and fight through a stunning futuristic city. Described as “breathtaking” by GameZone reviewer Lance Liebl, Transistor was said to have “the perfect combinations of strategy, depth, action, aesthetics, voice acting, story, and music.” The game only takes a few hours to playthrough so don’t expect it to hold you over for the entire summer, but it will definitely be an enjoyable experience.

MLB 14: The Show

Nothing sums up summer better than Major League Baseball — it’s America’s pastime.  And it just so happens that the best baseball video game series happens to be on PlayStation. Basball is all about the grind and summer time is the final stretch until playoffs. Got some time on your hands? Road to the Show or Diamond Dynasty should keep you pretty busy. And did I mention how amazing the game looks on PS4?

The Last of Us: Remastered

The Last of Us: Remastered technically isn’t out yet, but it will be soon (July 29). And it’s probably the biggest PS4 game to release this summer. Those of you who owned a PS3 already know what I’m talking about, but for you PlayStation newcomers, this is a must-buy. Heck, I already played the game on PS3 and I’m planning on picking it up again on PS4. Those 1080p, 60 frames per second are just going to be too good to pass up on. And with all of the previously released DLC already included, The Last of Us: Remastered should provide you with plenty of gameplay. Sure, it’s releasing towards the end of July, but it should get you past August and into September when we start to see some of the fall/winter blockbusters released.

Bonus: Destiny Beta

I know I said five, but starting in mid-July PS4 owners will have access to the beta for Destiny, Bungie's highly anticipated upcoming MMO shooter. By pre-ordering the game, you'll be granted access to the beta which, even though details are slim right now, should be pretty entertaining. If anything, it'll give you an early look at one of this fall's biggest blockbuster games.
