Final Fantasy fans and myself have been hoping for a Type-0 release in the US for years. The thirst was real, as was evident by a group of fans working on an unofficial translation patch for the PSP version. Then in June 2014, Square Enix dropped the bomb that not only will we be getting Type-0 here in the West, we'll be getting an HD port for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is at first about warring states, where you take control of the titular Class 0 and any of its 14 members, with each of them having wildly different weapon specialties and controlling quite differently.
This was certainly a spin-off game, though still under the Fabula Nova Crystalis universe established by Final Fantasy 13. For one, it had real-time combat as opposed to turn-based, and was overall much darker in tone than most previous FF games.
Type-0 HD also had a unique strategy mode where players would have to defend major cities on the overworld map from being invaded by enemies, as well as setting up defenses so they're not taken over again. It was an interesting mode that was only featured a few times in the game, and helped give the gameplay some variety.
The game was re-released on PC as well, getting rid of some of the slightly annoying graphical issues like the horrible motion blur, so if you're wondering which version to get, it's most likely that one. It may not be a masterpiece when it comes to Final Fantasy titles, but its uniqueness is what sets it apart and makes it so alluring.
