Breaking down the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer

The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer promises a film that is very true to the feel and tone of a classic Spidey tale, while also subverting a lot of things we've come to expect. In the 2 minutes of footage we've seen, there's a lot we can already glean. This doesn't necessarily spoil anything, trailers are designed to be flashes of footage to get you excited. By breaking it down frame by frame, there's a lot to insinuate and some of it may actually be true – which means it could be a spoiler.

You have been warned.

The trailer opens with a bank robbery by four guys in Avengers masks. They're packing some pretty high-tech gear, most likely provided to them by The Tinkerer, a character in the comics who… well, provides bad guys with high-tech gear. This character is rumored to be in the film, portrayed by Michael Chernus and that glowing purple energy is most likely Chitauri (aliens from Avengers) powered; this wouldn't be the first time in the MCU.

If we look at the international trailer we can see Bokeem Woodbine's Shocker. He seems to slam a bus into Spider-Man with his energy gauntlets. Peter is in his homemade costume, so we can assume that this is possibly a flashback to before Civil War. There's a chance it also takes place much later in the film, but we'll get to that. In other Shocker news…

This guy on the right is wearing a jacket even closer to the Shocker from the comics, although he has an energy cannon rather than gauntlets. I'm assuming then that there isn't just one Shocker, but multiple people taking on the name.

Who's that on the left? Donald Glover! Seemingly a bad guy, which would remove him considerably from the role of Miles Morales that everyone was dying to see him play. My best guess: he could be Hobbie Brown AKA The Prowler: a master thief with high tech gear that eventual becomes one of the good guys.

It would also seem like Michael Keaton's Vulture is being provided his gear from the Tinkerer. This awesome structure he's flying down is the Marriott of downtown Atlanta (which was where DragonCon was this year). So he's in a hotel, but why?

Because Peter is, of course! A ton of shots of Spider-Man in and out of the Washington monument, as well as saving his fellow classmates, suggests they're on a school field trip when things go terribly wrong. He's sharing a room here with Ned Leeds; a version of the character very different from the one in the comics.

Fun fact: that's a Lego Death Star Ned breaks when he discovers Peter's secret. Cross-brand marketing for the win! When Peter tries to play it off in the next shot that he's not Spider-Man, he hits the spider icon on his chest to loosen the suit. While a very cool mechanic, it's very inconvenient if he gets struck in the sternum during a fight.

It might not matter though, as there's strong evidence to suggest that Peter loses his costume! We see him in Avengers Tower, where Tony Stark tells him not to worry about the Vulture and to leave it to the more veteran heroes. As they walk down the hall, we see Peter wearing a t-shirt we've seen in the MCU before. It was previously worn by Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3. Is Tony Stark loaning him clothes because his suit was damaged?

Whatever the reasoning, it seems that Peter will be donning his original threads in the (seemingly) final battle on Coney Island, note the fingerless gloves and old school webshooters. . This is why I said in the beginning that the Shocker scene may be a flashback or late in the film. Peter and the beach front look severely beaten up, which suggests that this is toward the end of the film. I theorize that this is the double meaning to the film's title. Whilst it is a literal homecoming for Peter after Civil War, it's also him returning to being the street level hero. Tony clearly doesn't think he's cut out for Avenger-ing. Maybe Peter proves himself worthy by taking on the Vulture without any of Stark's gear and learns a valuable lesson while doing it.

And that's all the threads and easter eggs we could find! I feel like I've already spoiled so much for myself, I won't be watching anymore trailers. I'm already sold. If you noticed anything else, drop us a comment below!
