Can New Super Mario Bros. Wii Outsell Modern Warfare 2?

Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime said on GameTrailers TV that he thinks the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii can outsell the massively anticipated Modern Warfare 2 under certain circumstances. He said this while also giving respect to the competing game.

In an interview with GTTV host Geoff Keighly, Fils-Aime said that he thinks New Super Mario Bros. Wii can outsell a single SKU of Modern Warfare 2 by the end of January 2010. “On a single platform…absolutely,” said Fils-Aime. “I say that unequivocally.”

“You’ve got to give me the entire holiday selling season,” said Fils-Aime. “Let’s take it all the way through the January NPD data.” This is probably taking into account the nature of the sales of Nintendo’s successful first party games.

The original New Super Mario Bros. on the DS is currently the second top-selling game ever on the platform and probably one of the top-selling games ever. Between August 2006 and September 2009 it sold 19 million copies putting it right behind Nintendogs.

New Super Mario Bros., like many Nintendo games, gained its status by selling steady numbers over a long period of time. It’s possible that at some point in the future the Wii sequel could pull ahead of Modern Warfare 2.

“It’s going to be close,” said Fils-Aime, admitting his own anticipation for the game. “Of course I’ll play it…I play all the content out there.”

As much as New Super Mario Bros. DS sold, Call of Duty 4 across all platforms outpaced it, selling around 13 million between November 2006 (two years ago this week) and May 2009. Industry Analyst Michael Patcher believes Modern Warfare 2 could outdo that at 14 million inside 2009.

The only solid prediction we have on Modern Warfare 2 is GameStop pre-orders which have reached 2.6 million – the most ever for a game at GameStop.
