In Destiny, Relic Iron is a planetary material used primarily to upgrade Legendary and Exotic high level gear. Found on Mars, Relic Iron can be gathered in the environment or found in loot chests; however, given the material's ability to blend into the environment, it's sometimes better to stick with finding it in chests.
While there are already some established routes for Relic Iron farming runs on Mars, YouTuber "ThePwnstar4hire" has shared a video of a specific run that focuses on mining Relic Iron from loot chests. According to him, it's better than the one found at the start of the Mars patrol (in the Barrens).
