Did Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ poster drop an even bigger clue about Han Solo, Finn, and Rey?

Over the weekend at D23, Disney and Lucasfilm released the official poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, drawn by artist Drew Struzan (who famously created the iconic posters for the original Star Wars films).

The big takeaway from the poster reveal was that Finn, played by John Boyega, is seen wielding a lightsaber. Many had believed the character would possess some sort of Jedi powers, and this all but confirmed it.

But what if that wasn’t the big reveal of the poster? What if the poster revealed something much bigger about the plot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Keep in mind, this is purely my own speculation, but nothing is done by accident. Disney, Lucasfilm, and director J.J. Abrams are playing their cards very close to their chest with The Force Awakens and anything that’s unveiled for film (aside from leaks) is likely done with purpose — even something as subtle as a poster design or reveal.

And in the midst of all the mystery surrounding new characters Finn and Rey, whose last names we don’t yet know “to avoid spoilers,” Disney might have just dropped a major clue — and I’m not talking specifically of John Boyega’s potential Jedi abilities. I’m talking about his character, Finn’s possible relationship to Han Solo. Now before you completely dismiss the idea with the skin color argument, hear me out first.

It starts a year ago, when Lucasfilm dropped a thermonuclear detonator on the Star Wars Expanded Universe, claiming that all previous told stories about the universe were no longer official canon. Sure, the Expanded Universe stories could influence future Star Wars projects, but to avoid the limitations of having to stick with pre-existing stories, Lucasfilm essentially had to reboot the universe.

One of the major effects of the reboot came to light a few months ago when Marvel Comics, in Star Wars #6, revealed that Han Solo had actually been married to another woman before meeting Princess Leia in the Star Wars film trilogy. Her name is Sana Solo, and though she has quite the interesting backstory with Solo, the important takeaway for the purpose of this piece is her skin color. Sana Solo is black, or at least appears to be in the drawings.

Many already believe Rey to be the daughter of Han and Leia. Assuming Han and Sana had a relationship prior to him meeting Princess Leia, Finn’s age (Boyega is 23) wouldn’t exactly make sense for him to be her step-brother given the nearly four decades between A New Hope and The Force Awakens. However, it does put him at about the right age to be Han’s grandson, perhaps the son of a child Sana had and never told Han about (prior to the events of A New Hope).

But we can look beyond official canon. Just look how Disney is choosing to unveil certain aspects of The Force Awakens. In the first teaser, we got a brief look at Finn and Rey. With the second, slightly longer teaser trailer, we saw more of the two characters with the pleasant surprise of Han Solo. To date, Han has been the only character from the original trilogy we’ve seen alongside the new cast. Even on the new poster, we see Finn and Rey with Han. Why is that?

Because I believe all three are related by blood. Leaked images reveal that at some point in The Force Awakens all three will be on the Millennium Falcon, and what better way to bring these characters together than a family connection? Family and relationship has always been a strong theme in the Star Wars franchise. Luke and Leia’s secret relationship was one of the original trilogy’s biggest reveals, and even the prequels were rife with mention of the bonds of blood and kin. Is it possible that Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues the central theme of family and relationship?

Like I said, nothing Disney or Lucasfilm do is by accident or sheer coincidence. There’s a reason they chose to create the whole Han/Sana story, and I’m willing to bet it was for more than just shock value or adding more people of color to the Star Wars universe. I have no doubt Boyega was cast for his acting talent and not his skin color. If I’m remembering correctly, I even recall reading how the part of Finn was not written for a specific skin color; however, given that he is black, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lucasfilm or Disney had to write a little extra to make it fit into Canon, especially if Finn and Rey were intended to be movie versions of Jaina and Jacen Solo.

That last bit may be a bit more conspiracy theory on my part, as this could’ve been in the plans all along. I have equal trouble imagining Disney coming up with this grand plan to rewrite Star Wars canon for the sake of skin color. All I know is there is something much bigger going on here with these three characters that’s being kept a mystery and this poster might have been our first clue.

Earlier this month, director J.J. Abrams said it was intentional that we don’t know the last names of Finn and Rey. Is it because they are both related to Solo?

Grandpop Solo does have a nice, warm ring to it.
