Following one of the more dramatic and newsworthy weekends in indie gaming, we've got a handful of games to report on today. This edition of the Indie Roundup will cover a canceled game by a frustrated developer (Yeah, you know who I'm talking about.), but there are also some new games you should be excited about. Additionally, a pleasant little Metroidvania is making its way to the PC from the PlayStation Network, and if you've yet to play it, you should definitely be excited. So with that said, let's talk indie games!
Phil Fish cancels Fez 2 and leaves the industry behind
The biggest recent occurrence in the world of indie games was easily Phil Fish's departure from video game development this past weekend. You all know the story by now: Marcus “Annoyed Gamer” Beer made some comments about Fish, prompting the indie dev to go on a huge rant on Twitter, cancel Fez 2, and call it quits. It's a damn shame it had to come to this, and here's hoping the dude changes his mind — not just because I really want to play Fez 2, but because I truly think Fish's actual fans deserve better.
Check out a piece by GameZone's Josh Wirtanen about why Fish's exit is something we should care about.
Guacamelee Gold Edition will soon suplex the hell out of the PC
If you've yet to play Guacamelee because you don't own a PlayStation 3 or Vita, then you really missed out on a fun little Metroidvania. Thankfully, you'll soon be able to check the game out as Drinkbox Studios confirmed that it's coming to the PC. Guacamelee Gold Edition will feature the main game and two DLC packs, and it's heading to Steam for $14.99 on August 8. In addition to all of the in-game content, you'll also get achievements, leaderboards, cloud saving, and those delightful Steam Trading Cards. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, pre-ordering Guacamelee Gold Edition will get you a free download of Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack.
Monochroma is a Limbo-esque game you should watch out for
In development by Turkey-based Nowhere Studios, Monochroma is one of those games that you should definitely watch out for. Influenced by Limbo and Ico, this upcoming puzzle-platformer features a dreary graphical style, industrial dystopian setting, and some truly clever challenges. Monochroma is due out in December 2013 for PC, Mac, and Linux, and Nowhere is currently looking at potential versions for the PlayStation 4, Vita, Wii U, and Ouya.
You can try out the demo, and if you dig the experience, check out the game on Kickstarter. Stay tuned for a full preview, as well as an interview with the developer next week on the Indie Spotlight.
MouseCraft mixes Lemmings, Tetris, and cheese
Crunching Koalas, the team behind the word-based dungeon crawler WordTrap Dungeon, is currently working on another project. MoiuseCraft is being dubbed a cross between Lemmings and Tetris, tasking you with putting together different combinations of blocks to help some cheese-loving rodents progress through various levels. You can check out the free alpha, and if you like the game, you can support it through Crunching Koalas' “pay what you feel” model, which allows you to give the studio the amount of money you think the game is worth with no average price to beat.
Give the MouseCraft alpha a look-see, and if you have a fun time, why not give the game your vote on Steam Greenlight?
