Dr. David’s Indie Spotlight: Not on Steam Sale

Chances are if you own a computer and play video games, you have that lovely Steam client installed. Through Valve's reputable digital download market, you can access seemingly endless indie games that challenge you with brutal difficulty, tug at your nostalgic heartstrings thanks to old school design, or just fill you with bliss with their utter charm. Sadly, not every awesome indie game lands on Steam. That's where Not on Steam comes in.

Developer Flippfly, who most recently worked on the wonderfully addictive Race the Sun, has launched the campaign, promoting games that aren't on Steam (at least not yet) and selling them at ridiculously affordable (and obviously attractive) prices. The games on hand include titles that are currently going through the Steam Greenlight process, and Flippfly along with the developers involved with each project are hoping to raise awareness on these games. Most importantly, though, these devs are also giving you some great deals.

Currently, there are nearly 60 games available through the Not on Steam sale. These include 6180 the moon, Blood of the Werewolf, Mousecraft, Race the Sun, Spud's Quest, Tiny Barbarian DX, and a whole bunch of other rad indie games. Sales begin at 25 percent off the original price, which is sweet, and go all the way up to a whopping 50 percent off, ensuring that you get a solid discount on games that you can't currently find on the Steam storefront.

Of course, aside from saving some decent coinage, there's good news for diehard Steam fans. If you snag a game that eventually gets Greenlit somewhere down the road, or if it's already been Greenlit (which is the case with Mousecraft and Race the Sun), you'll get a Steam download code at no extra charge. Because ya know, sometimes it's nice to just have all of your games on Steam.

It should be noted that the folks at Flippfly are in no way some anti-Steam goblins. I mean, the fact that Race the Sun is on Greenlight and has made it through that process should be indicative of that. The Not on Steam sale is primarily poised toward raising interest in a number of games that a lot of people would otherwise miss out on. So if you're a big Steam user, or if you know someone who digs the service and also likes playing cool indie games, spread the word, help some devs out, and get to playing fun games for cheap.

If you want to save some cash, be sure to get to it as these Not on Steam discounts won't be around for too long. As of this writing, there are just about three days left to save on the nearly 60 indie games available. So now I have to ask: Why are you still here?
