Demon's Souls
The progenitor of the "Souls-like" genre.
Demon's Souls is a Japanese take on the Western RPG, combining the best of all worlds, and bringing From Software to the forefront of gaming. What may have seemed like a flash in the pan success gave way to a series with the conception of Dark Souls. Since then, the Souls franchise (that includes Bloodborne) has become a genre unto itself. People have made careers of deciphering Souls game lore. Hell, even I've done my own theory crafting.
Demon's Souls needs to make a return. While many believe Dark Souls 1 to be the superior game, the world of Boletaria is a flavor all its own. It feels slower, more methodical, and has a bit more of the horror element in it. Very few games have realized atmospheres as unnerving as the Tower of Latria. It's high fantasy meets Lovecraftian horror, wrapped in a beautiful world that will test your skills and try to drive you mad, and it did this before Bloodborne.
The series is at the height of its popularity, and Dark Souls 3 is coming next year, the time is right for a Demon's Souls remake. Besides, out of all the games on this list, Demon's Souls ran the absolute worst. Fans would kill for a proper 60 fps on this game.
That's our list, how does it stack up in your opinion? Do you have a better list of PS3 exclusives you can share with us? Go ahead and drop it on us in the comments section
Infamous 1 & 2
I'm ready to bring the thunder again.
Infamous' initial release lead to some inadvertent hilarity thanks to the timing of Prototype's release. Two video games about unwilling heroes, that are given superpowers, and put in a sandbox released within two weeks of each other. They even had similar receptions.
Of course, Infamous was the better game overall, and the sequel was a step up with better animations, powers, and tighter controls. Usually sandbox games have a disconnect between story and game play, but the first two infamous games balanced the two as adroitly as I've ever seen.
These games need the remaster treatment, and it's a damn that it didn't come about before Infamous: Second Son. As an apology, I'd accept a remaster collection featuring all three.
The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection
Yo dawg, I heard you like HD remasters, so we put an HD remaster of an HD remaster on your list…
This is getting into Xzibit territory here, but it makes sense on multiple levels. Ico was a critically acclaimed game that affected many other devs, but sold poorly. Shadow of the Colossus sold much better due to a better, more wide spread marketing push. Neither were gangbusters though. In fact, most people were probably exposed to the games via the PS+ instant game collection giving out the HD remaster collection.
With The Last Guardian rising from the dead at E3, it would only make perfect sense to bring the other Team Ico games to the PS4 in preparation for TLG's release. There's an entirely new audience to reach, and many of them would probably be interested in playing these classics in anticipation of the new title's release.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
MGS4 taught an Old Snake new tricks.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is almost upon us, so it's pretty surprising Konami didn't move to bring the chronological finale to next gen consoles. Even if they are trying to exit the console gaming business, an HD remaster fits right in line with their desire for better return on investment: HD remasters are cheap to make and can pull in a lot of money, just look at The Last of Us on PS4.
While MGS4 does have its detractors, there's no denying that its a well made game that sends Snake of to pasture with as good an ending as you're ever going to get in that universe. Considering the only place to play the game is on Sony's worst selling home console, there are plenty of people who would appreciate a chance to get get more hands on time with an high definition clone of a game about a high quality clone.
Sony catches a lot of flack for their PS4 lineup heavily featuring HD remasters, but it is a good move. They're cheap and easy to put out, and many of the PlayStation 4's audience are converts from the Xbox brand, meaning there are a lot of PS4 owners that simply haven't experienced some of the best PlayStation games from last gen. There's also a nice value aspect to the HD remaster, which often comes at a reduced price or as a collection of several games.
Sony recently claimed that even more HD remasters are coming to the console in the future, so instead of complaining about it, we've decided to make a list of the top 5 PS3 exclusives that need the HD remaster treatment. I don't think this needs to be stated, but this will not include games that have been announced for HD remasters but have yet to be released, such as Uncharted.
Ni no Kuni
Ni no Kuni is just Studio Ghibli the Game.
Technically this isn't a PS3 exclusive, as there was a 3DS version, but they were radically different so we're counting it. The seventh console generation was one of the absolute worst for the JRPG genre. There were far fewer releases, and even the mighty Final Fantasy series took a heavy tumble from the FF13 and initial FF14 missteps.
It was a perfect time for new names to step up and fill the gap, and that's where Ni no Kuni comes in. It's JRPG to its core, filled with the beautiful artwork of Studio Ghibli, and features a great story. The game may have some issues with the grind, but overall it's charm incarnate.
