Game of the Month – May: Super Mario Galaxy 2

It may seem like 2007 all over again with the new releases of Halo, Call of Duty, Crackdown, Skate, Mass Effect, Portal, and Crysis already in the pipeline for a 2010 release or on store shelves today. Don’t fret if the mass sequelitis of video-game publishers bothers you as Nintendo proved that sequels are able to improve on their predecessors and also make a case that they can ramp up the entertainment value. With Super Mario Galaxy 2, Nintendo has not only thrown their name in the hat for Game of the Month, but Game of the Year too.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Nintendo didn’t exactly throw out the blueprints of what made Super Mario Galaxy a critically-acclaimed and a financial success. They, instead, took their castle and decided to build an empire around it.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a fantastic second foray into the 3D-platforming genre for Mario on the Nintendo Wii. It went forth and implemented even better level designs – which, was thought by many to be impossible – and varied the gameplay by taking the lead with a combination of level formats such as: 3D wide-open, 3D linear and 2D side-scroller. It’s not only bigger and better, but it fulfills almost every demand by diehard fans for the perfect Mario title.

Plus, who doesn’t love the ability to ride Yoshi, Mario’s charming green dinosaur companion.

The runner-up of May delivered upon expectations of its fans for single-player improvements.

UFC Undisputed 2010

Not only did THQ make UFC Undisputed 2010 the game that the original should’ve been, but they went one step further and provided a surplus of replay value. Compared to the first, the single-player career mode in 2010 is leaps and bounds better to the point of embarrassment. Containing more depth and amateur leagues to fight through, the career is now worthy of the player’s time and dedication.

While the online component may have been rough at time of release, THQ is reportedly on the case, if not already found the resolutions, to fix the issues. Regardless, the introduction of online fan camps and better stat-tracking is beneficial to players looking for something a little more substantial for their online fighting games.
