GameZone’s 2013 Holiday Gift Guide for Gamers – Movies

Sometimes it can be tricky to shop for a dedicated gamer. Most of the time they have a lot of the games they want already. That’s why we’d like to recommend some movies game fans will love. Sure, we could list off the regular great movies of the year (Gravity? Pacific Rim?), but you can find those from any site. The following are recent great movies about video games that any fan of the hobby will love.

Indie Game: The Movie

Required watching for fans of Super Meat Boy, Fez, or Braid, this documentary goes behind the scenes of indie development in an honest and touching way. The film follows Meat Boy and Fez through the ups and downs of their development, while interviewing Jonathan Blow as one of the father figures of modern indie games. Sure, that sounds a bit pretentious, but honestly they pull it off, presenting a documentary that anyone can appreciate. For more, check out our review.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang

Another documentary, Minecraft: The Story of Mojang descends into the phenomenon of Minecraft, its creators, and the impact it has had on so many people. It doesn’t have the same drama that Indie Game: The Movie has, but you’re still getting a fascinating story of sudden success for Notch and crew. In addition, the doc delves into the fan side, from hobbyist creators and educational applications. Any fan of Minecraft should check it out. Here’s our review.

Wreck-it Ralph

To change things up, we have Wreck-it Ralph. One of Disney’s best recent films, this one tells the story of an arcade world and the characters that live within it. It’s creative in that same, Pixar-esque, observational humor way, and it features amazing voice performances by John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman. Sure, the entire film isn’t strictly about games, but it’s so good that it doesn’t matter too much. For more, check out our review.

Mortal Kombat Legacy

Mortal Kombat Legacy was a pleasant surprise for many when it debuted online. Who knew Mortal Kombat could actually have some decent live-action filmmaking related to it. Whoever you get this one for might scoff at first, or feel nasty flashbacks to the older movies, but it really is good stuff. Sure, you could watch the whole thing online, but the full DVD set is a great way to turn the series into a cool gift. Plus, season 2 is available now too!

Ace Attorney

Okay, we’re saving quite possibly the best for last here, but this is potentially a fan-only affair. For anyone who plays the Phoenix Wright games, Ace Attorney is a must-watch. It does an amazing job of capturing the half-silly, half-dark tone of the games and adapting the original story into a coherent, two-hour film. The trick is finding this one with English subtitles. The purchase link below is the best we could find, but trust that this is worth tracking down for fans. Our full review is also available here.

Video games became an amazing, artful, interactive story-driven medium for me right around when I played Panzer Dragoon Saga on Sega Saturn. Ever since then, I've wanted to be a part of this industry. Somewhere along the line I, possibly foolishly, decided I'd rather write about them than actually make them. So here I am.
