GameZone’s most anticipated video games of 2019

2018 was a pretty solid year for games with Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, Spider-Man, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and many others. While we’re still basking in the glory of some of these games, 2019 is already starting to look mighty appealing.

As 2018 winds down and 2019 grows closer, we’re taking a look at what the new year has to offer as it’ll be kicking off with a bang and won’t be letting up for quite a while. For right now, this list will contain games that have a confirmed release date. That means you won’t find the likes of The Last of Us Part 2, Death Stranding, or other games that continue to taunt us with cool trailers but no release in sight.

You won’t find every 2019 game on here either, just ones we find to be the most appealing and exciting. Without further ado, here are GameZone’s most anticipated games of 2019.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: January 18th, 2019

Ace Combat makes its current-generation debut with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Players as callsign Trigger who has been assigned to a penal military unit after being accused of murdering a former president and will take to the skies to fight both manned planes and a newer, more modern threat: drones.

If you own a PlayStation VR, Ace Combat 7 will also feature three VR specific missions but the campaign can’t be played this way despite this previously being believed/assumed after its initial announcement.

Resident Evil 2 Remake – Xbox One, PS4, PC

Release Date: January 25th, 2019

Resident Evil is one of gaming’s most renowned franchises. Sure, it has had some significant lows with the likes of Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil 6 but the series has been on a major uptick for the last several years. We’ve had Resident Evil Remake, the Revelations series (on Switch too!), and the soft-reboot the series needed with the acclaimed Resident Evil 7.

Now, we’re going back to Raccoon City for the first time in quite a while with one of the most beloved survival horror games: Resident Evil 2. Players will re-experience Resident Evil 2 for the first time all over again with Leon Kennedy attempting to survive and uncover a zombie outbreak in the remote town of Raccoon City. This from the ground up remake brings new controls, visuals, and more with all the iconic moments revitalized for a new era.

This full-blown runs on 7’s engine, the RE engine, which allows for gorgeous visuals and enhanced gameplay. The remake removes the fixed camera angles and tank controls from the original in favor of a modernized over-the-shoulder third person view and more comfortable controls.

Resident Evil 2 is known for its horror roots, something the series eventually strayed from but has come back around to since then in an almost circular fashion. With that, Capcom was adamant about maintaining the horror and tension of the original game within the remake. Challenges arose when they realized a lot of the horror came from the presentation of the original via sounds, camera angles, and the controls so Capcom has had to largely rework encounters and sequences in the game with lighting, room layouts, and more.

Kingdom Hearts III – Xbox One, PS4

Release Date – January 29th, 2019

Square Enix’s iconic action-RPG Disney cross-over franchise is finally making its return over a decade after its last mainline entry with Kingdom Hearts III. Protagonist Sora is joined by the likes of Goofy, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck to search for the seven Guardians of Light and stop antagonist Master Xehanort from bringing about a second Keyblade War.

The gang’s adventure will see them entering the worlds of some of Disney’s most prized films such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Frozen, Tangled, and more to team up with their respective heroes and save the day.

Gameplay will allow players to add five characters to their party and explore familiar worlds with frantic, flashy action. Characters will have their own unique expected abilities including ones inspired by famous Disney attractions such as Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and more. When not engaging in the fast-paced combat, players can participate in mini-games like a cooking-themed activity set in the world of Ratatouille.

Metro Exodus – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: February 15th, 2019

Metro is finally making its return after lying mostly dormant for the last five years. This direct sequel to the last two titles in the Russian post-apocalyptic survival series follows silent protagonist Artyom and a band of Spartan Rangers two years after Metro: Last Light in search of a new home away from the tunnels of Moscow.

Exodus will lead players on a journey far and wide across the continent with players boarding a modified train to temporarily call home. As you explore the world, you’ll be introduced to a more immersive yet freeing Metro experience with non-linear levels, a day/night and weather cycle, impactful branching choices, a world filled with unknown, deadly threats and harsh conditions, and much more.

Anthem – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: February 15th, 2019

After a rocky attempt to resurrect their acclaimed RPG series, Mass Effect, Bioware is back with an all-new IP. Ditching their single player RPG roots, Anthem marks the start of an ongoing four-player co-operative game where you come from a walled-off city that keeps out dangerous creatures lurking across the planet you live on.

Your squad (or just you, if you want to play solo) will suit up in Iron Man-like suits known as Javelins and stock up on big guns and explosives to explore the world, solve the mysteries within it, and take down plenty of giant beasts that call this world home. Despite a focus on building a “shared world”, Bioware’s narrative focus still remains with various NPCs to interact with, extensive lore surrounding the world of Anthem, and a main story to play through.

Anthem will be a regularly updated game that Bioware plans to keep alive for quite some time so don’t expect this to be a game that you play for a few weeks and then dip out of because you did everything there is to do.

Jump Force – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: February 15th, 2019

Jump Force is a brand new fighting game that mixes some of the biggest anime and manga out there, specifically ones featured in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Players will also encounter non-playable characters like Death Note’s Ryuk as they play the story which takes place in our own universe. That means stages will take players to places like Times Square, New York and Paris where they’ll be free to duke it out in earthshattering, flashy 3-on-3 tag team fights.

Crackdown 3 – Xbox One, PC

Release Date: February 15th, 2019

After much delay, Crackdown 3 will finally be released as Xbox One’s first 2019 AAA exclusive in February. Set a decade after the second game, The Agency saddles up for a new threat in the fictional city of New Providence which has become home to a group of terrorists known as Terra Nova.

Led by Terry Crews’ Commander Jaxon, players will use all sorts of guns, gadgets, and superpower-esque abilities to take down Terra Nova in the highly destructible city (courtesy of Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service). Players will dismantle the organization by going after kingpins and bases which can draw attention and backfire on the player by sparking gang retaliations that target the player specifically.

Crackdown 3 also features a competitive multiplayer mode known as Wrecking Zone which allows the entire city to be completely leveled amidst the chaos, meaning no building or structure left standing.

Far Cry New Dawn – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: February 15th, 2019

Just announced a couple weeks ago at The Game Awards, Ubisoft is returning to the world of Far Cry with an all-new spin-off which serves as a direct sequel to Far Cry 5. New Dawn takes place well over a decade after bombs dropped on America, specifically Montana, and turned it into a wasteland.

As you jockey for control of the ruined nation from opposing factions, you’ll scavenge for resources, build weapons from mere scrap, and explore areas outside Montana by venturing towards the west coast and canyons in other states. Juggling the chaotic gameplay of Far Cry with a unique setting and premise, Ubisoft looks to be creating yet another thrilling open-world experience filled with beautiful environment and whacky humor.

Devil May Cry V – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

The Division 2 – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: March 15th, 2019

Ubisoft’s newest Tom Clancy IP is returning in 2019 after a smashing debut in 2016. After a virus broke out on Black Friday, the United States has ultimately fallen into utter chaos with a small task force of sleeper agents rising from the ashes to regain control.

The Division 2 is set 7 months after the first game and puts us in control of Division agents making an effort to prevent a coup on the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Ubisoft has stated that their D.C. is a 1:1 representation of America’s core with landmarks, neighborhoods, and authentic natural landscapes.

Amongst the chaotic story, you’ll be able to participate in raids, PVP encounters, co-op activities, and much more. It looks to be more of an evolution of Ubisoft’s fun formula for the first game rather than introducing significant changes that fundamentally change the game.

Days Gone – PS4

Release Date: April 26th, 2019

Days Gone has been cooking for many years at Sony Bend, even long before its announcement many were wondering what Bend could possibly be up to as they had been abnormally quiet since releasing Uncharted: Golden Abyss in 2011.

In 2016, they finally revealed the survival horror game at E3 which featured a biker getting overwhelmed by an unprecedented amount of very fast zombies. The game made a huge impression on many and has time has gone on, it continues to look very unique. Players will maintain their bike, weapons, and character as they travel the world in search for resources.

Within this world are not only the standard undead but other ruthless survivors and infected animals like bears. The world is filled with dangers with various levels of intelligence, creating unparalleled tension and varied difficulty.

Rage 2 – Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Release Date: May 14th, 2019

Despite being a sequel to a game that received a mixed reception upon release nearly a decade ago, Rage 2 has a LOT going for it. The wild, frantic action and gunplay that only ID Software can deliver, an intriguing open world created by Avalanche, and an irreverent tone that will likely put smiles on millions of players.

With lots of color, blood, and bullets, Rage 2 is looking like it’ll be buckets of fun and we’re very excited to play with all the toys ID and Avalanche are putting in our hands.

Shenmue 3 – PS4 and PC

Release Date: August 27th, 2019

It has been nearly twenty years since the last Shenmue and we are finally getting Shenmue 3 in the new year. As teenage Ryu continues his quest to find his father’s killer, he travels from Japan to China where he meets a young woman named Shenhua who tells him of a legend that has “foretold their path together”.

In Shenmue 3, you’ll navigate through the rich world in an effort to solve a mystery that haunts Ryu. We may not get all the answers though as director Yu Suzuki claims this isn’t the conclusion to the story as he hopes to make more games in the series. The fact that the game is happening is equivalent to the likes of a third Half-Life game releasing as gamers have been dying to further Ryu’s adventure and explore all of the tiny details Suzuki places in the Shenmue games.

Of course, there’s a lot of other games coming in 2019, like Mortal Kombat 11, Control, Gears 5, and more. All those games look/sound exciting but given the minimal info around them right now, we’re holding off on putting them on our most anticipated list!

As we get further into the year, we’ll have extensive coverage on all the hottest titles of 2019 and beyond. We look forward to yet another year of fantastic games, make sure you stay tuned to GameZone throughout the year for previews, interviews, reviews, and other coverage on all things gaming.
