Since the first World Cyber Games event in 2001, numerous competitions and leagues have cropped up around the world with the intention of raising professional gaming to sport status and glorifying its star players as celebrities. Some of the best players, like Jonathon “Fatal1ty†Wendel, have elevated their game to such a level that they’ve earned name recognition even among casual gamers. Indeed, earning a living playing videogames has become one of the newest dream jobs of kids everywhere.
On December 16, IGN Entertainment’s Championship Gaming Invitational 07 will take place at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, giving invited players a chance to compete for cash prizes in one of three events. Sponsored by DirecTV, Best Buy and Microsoft Xbox, CGI 07 features Dead or Alive 4 and Project Gotham Racing 3 for the Xbox 360 and Counter-Strike: Source on the PC. DirecTV will be airing the event in February.
