GC 2006: Mario Strikers Charged

It seems as if golf, tennis, and baseball won’t just be the sports games available from Nintendo for the Wii.

Breaking news from the Games Convention 2006 has it that a new Wii game, titled Mario Strikers Charged, has been confirmed. Apparently the game will make varied use of the Wii-mote, but will also feature the motion-sensor capabilities for the title’s mini-games. The nun-chuk controller will be used as well.

A playable demonstration was shown on stage at GC 06, as captains can be chosen from the likes of Nintendo franchise characters such as Bowser, Peach, Donkey Kong, and Mario. From there, companions are chosen for their respective teams, and then a stadium, which can directly alter the way each match is played by their bold environments. As of now, there will be 12 selectable captains with three of eight sidekicks available for the game’s numerous modes. Also, each captain will have their own set of skills and super abilities.

According to Nintendo… “anything goes in Mario Strikers Charged as players are allowed to utilize a variety of special abilities to clinch important goals.”

The gameplay showed that several super-moves called “Mega Strikes” were possible, as Mario was seen in the demonstration throwing the ball high-up from the sun. Other instances has the iron ball splitting into five balls and flying into the goal all at once. The defending player must use the Wii remote, and drag their hands to aim towards the balls and shoot them out of the air before they concede a goal. For regular shots, the goal-keeper is also able to hold up his hands [physically], using the Wii controller to block incoming shots. In addition, players can also charge energy to the metal ball, making it more likely to be fired at the goal faster and with more efficiency.

The graphical style of Mario Strikers Charged is very similar to Super Mario Strikers, with camera angles from the side and above the arena. The shooting mechanism also remains paralleled with the original GameCube soccer title.

Lastly, Mario Strikers Charged will not only feature an action-packed multiplayer mode, but will also support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, allowing players to compete with others in online tournaments around the world. The news comes as the first confirmation of a heavily-backed online Wii title.
