Grand Theft Auto IV Animators Create Virtual Human

So, just how realistic did you feel the characters were in Grand Theft Auto IV? Well, as it happens, the guys behind the animation for the game can do a lot better. Check out this video as they explain:

Emily, as Image Metrics have dubbed her, is based on actress Emily O’Brien. It’s not Emily O’Brien though. The producers asked O’Brien to pose for 35 facial images and then they went to work creating virtual Emily. New modeling technology allowed Image Metrics to control the most minute parts of her face to give Emily the most convincing movement we’ve ever seen.

This level of realism is, in part, thanks to the latest chips from AMD that feature over a billion transistors. These chips allow this level of realism to be realized by making it usable even on home computers. Before these chips came about it was pointless to create human movement too realistic because average consumers wouldn’t be able to appreciate it with the equipment they were using. AMD believes the line between real and fake won’t be completely blurred until 2020 though. — gadget zone

Not too shabby. I wonder how well this could be applied to games that use real life figures, such as football, movie-based games, or wrestling.
