In issue #191 of Nintendo Power, the publication revealed some new information regarding the upcoming DS title, Advance Wars DS. One of the main differences between the DS iteration of the series and its predecessors is in regard to the player’s commanding officers. These CO’s are in charge of the user’s army, and in past versions of the game it was only possible to utilize one particular officer. However, with in the DS title, the game enables you to switch off between two CO’s. As in the past, your commanding officers will possess unique attributes which will affect your troops in a number of ways. In the current game though, it is possible to switch your officer at any time to take advantage of these benefits.
Like the originals, the commanding officers of your army will have special meters that when filled enable them to perform a special attack. On the DS, both officer’s gauges will increase simultaneous, enabling for a new type of special move, the tag break. These tag breaks allow your CO’s to launch consecutive special attacks which may or may not compliment each other well.
Aside from a brand new, 25 mission campaign, gamers can expect Advance Wars DS to come equipped with several new game modes. The most intriguing new option, a combat mode, forces the player to purchase their units and commanding officers at the beginning of the mode and then allowing you to place and control your forces in real time. The control pad of the system will be used to move your troops, while the touch screen is responsible for allowing the user to choose their targets.
Other than this new, real time strategy mode, the game is said to feature an all new survival mode where the player will be forced to take on a series of missions with special circumstances inhibiting them. For instance, their will be missions in which you have insufficient resources and others where you are dictated by a time limit. The mode will progress successively through missions until the user fails.
The game also takes advantage of the most obvious of the system’s unique features, its two screens. The top screen will allow for dual screened battles where both will show a particular arena of the battlefield. One screen will be responsible for portraying the hectic air battle, while the other will show the struggle on the ground.
Other additions to the series include a barrage of new weaponry. Fans of the series can expect to be waging war with a stealth bomber, a new powerful, mega tank, and an aircraft carrier. The action will even reach to the stars, as players can take control over a satellite to wreak havoc on their enemies.
