I Bought a PS2 Just for Kingdom Hearts

Some picked up a PS2 due to their love of the original Sony PlayStation. Others to enjoy games like Metal Gear Solid and the Jak and Daxter franchise.

I’m not one of those people; I bought a PS2 solely for Kingdom Hearts.

When you learn of my complete adoration and love for Disney, this will all make sense.

The Little Mermaid was the first movie I saw in theaters. Granted, due to the fact that I was a baby, I don’t quite remember it. But the movie undoubtedly planted a seed in my brain to enjoy the oncoming Disney renaissance. Enjoy it I did; The Rescuers Down Under was another favorite of mine as a toddler. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite movies of all time and was robbed of — eh, wait. The Silence of the Lambs is a well-deserving picture. The point still remains; Aladdin, The Lion King, and the rest of the Disney Renaissance are all classic movies. A decade later came Pixar and the absolute perfection of Toy Story, Monster’s Inc., Wall-E, and Up.

If you haven’t been able to figure it out by now, I f***ing love Disney. Seeing Enchanted was like a dream come true as I stepped into a world that was thought to be long gone. But the problem with the movies is that they were only temporary windows. I was a voyeur peeking into a world I couldn’t interact with.

But there was also Kingdom Hearts, allowing me to be transported between worlds. The charm of Final Fantasy and the wonder of Disney combined. I could interact and explore. I could live in worlds that rekindled my childhood, sparked my imagination, and put a smile on my face. But alas, I owned an Xbox and GameCube, which eventually turned into an Xbox 360 and Wii. I had no method of playing Kingdom Hearts. So I went out, bought a used system, and enjoyed every second of my purchases.

With the future forecasting not only the re-release of Kingdom Hearts (and possibly Kingdom Hearts II) for the PS3, as well as the release of Kingdom Hearts III on the PS3, it might be finally time to pick up another Sony console. Sure, it’ll let me play through games like Uncharted and The Last of Us, but I can honestly play those at a friend’s house.

But I don’t want them to watch me play Kingdom Hearts as I sing along with the Disney songs. That will just be our little secret.
