Nintendo of Europe has issued a press release today, revealing several of the newly created racetracks for their upcoming title,Mario Kart DS. It has already been confirmed that the forthcoming game will feature 32 tracks, with 16 original creations and 16 retro courses from previous games in the series.
The game will be comprised of two modes known as Retro Grand Prix and Nitro Grand Prix. As you might expect, the Retro mode will feature the game’s 16 classic tracks, while Nitro is dedicated to newly created levels. Both of these modes will be broken up in to four cups; mushroom, flower, star, and special with each cup containing four unique racetracks.
Today, Nintendo has revealed some of the details surrounding the Nitro Grand Prix mode. The mushroom cup of the mode will feature a Hawaiian-style course known as Yoshi Falls as the second course in the cup.
Yoshi Falls is set at the bottom of a waterfall-filled valley equipped with two in-game levels, an upper and a lower. The upper portion of the map will feature a flat surface filled with dash panels, but as expected, racers can fly off the surface if caution is not taken. The map’s lower level is set on a 45 degree angle and against the current of gushing water.
Nintendo has also confirmed today that Mario Kart DS will be filled with hidden shortcuts and different paths to give the eight possible racers space to maneuver.
Following Yoshi Falls will be Luigi’s Mansion. This course is set to be the final track in the game’s mushroom cup and will feature a racetrack running through the familiar location.
The course is described as having tight quarters to make navigating the track a challenge. In addition, racers will also have to contend with swinging chandeliers, shady staircases, and even gravestones that can temporarily freeze your kart.
As a juxtaposition of sorts to Lugi’s Mansion, Nintendo is set to include Delfino Square as part of the game’s flower cup. Perspective racers should note that this level is actually unique to Mario Kart DS, and is entirely different than the Delfino level present in Mario Kart: Double Dash.
The course begins in the tight, windy streets of the town square and progresses through a littered harbor. To complete the lap, racers must have enough speed to leap across and reach the level’s open drawbridge.
Following Delfino Square in the flower cup is a track known as Waluigi Pinball. As expected, the course is constructed in a massive pinball table. The level will arrive with tunnels, ramps, sharp turns, bumpers, and everything else you might associate with pinball.
Nintendo has high hopes for the level, as they are asserting that it will show off the graphical powers of the Nintendo DS. The track is said to be full of bright, neon lights, and gleaming metal.
With Mario Kart DS set to release in shortly under a month in North America, be on the lookout for further information regarding the track list of the upcoming title shortly.
