J.J. Abrams ‘regrets’ not directing Star Wars: Episode VIII

Through longtime friend Greg Grunberg, it has been revealed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams is regretting his decision to not direct the next installment in the new trilogy. It isn't the money or doubt with Episode VIII director Rian Johnson that has Abrams filled with regret, but rather the script of the sequel. Apparently, the script for Episode VIII is so good that Abrams wishes he was directing it.

“He read it and said something he never, ever says. He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it,'" Grunberg told The Washington Post of longtime friend Abrams.

“He may have said something one time on Lost, with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator],” the actor added, “but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Abrams was reportedly offered more than one Star Wars film, though he declined to return fo the sequel. As a result, Lucasfilm hired a different director for each subsequent installment. Rian Johnson will direct Episode VIII, while Colin Trevorrow, fresh off Jurassic World, will helm Episode IX.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on May 26, 2017. Filming will reportedly begin in a few weeks.
