Kaz Hirai Says the Darndest Things, Episode 147: “We’re Not Competing with Microsoft or Nin

If you can’t beat ’em, fight something hundreds of times bigger. That’s Kaz Hirai’s brand new saying, kinda.

“I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers’ attention,” said Hirai in an interview with MCV.

Mmmm ‘kay. Does that mean Nintendo and Microsoft win by default? No? Just makin’ sure.

And while I think this is certainly an admirable goal, Sony’s buying into their own hype a little too much. Nintendo and Microsoft are, with each game they churn out and each console they place into the hands of customers, making cash that could be lining Sony’s pockets. Competition? I think so.

Oh, Hirai’s comment was simply an exaggerated expression of hubris? Well, this is awkward.
