Killzone 3 is a coming! Well, at least if the latest GamePro is to be believed. Well, actually, if a website reporting on reports from the latest GamePro is to believed. But we digress… Killzone 3! Yay! Killzone 2 is still considered by many to be the best looking game on any of the current generation consoles, and looks aside, it wasn’t too shabby in other areas. The single player campaign was perhaps a bit forgettable and the script was overly expletive heavy, but the multiplayer was excellent and offered one of the most enjoyable online shooter experiences seen in recent years. Couple that with moderately good sales and a sequel was all but guaranteed. That said, with only a glance at the first details, will some gamers feel that a glance is enough?
While several minor hints were dropped referring to new weapons and such, a major and potentially disappointing one was set down indicating that Killzone 3 may in fact be a 3D only game. Perhaps it’s too early to tell how successful 3D televisions will be, but even Killzone 3 hits a few years down the road 3D equipped TVs are still probably going to cost a pretty penny more than a lot of people have, especially with the recession still going and brand spanking new HDTVs just now becoming the norm.
A 3D only game would depend on millions of people being willing to invest in that technology prior to the game’s release when realistically 3D TVs may remain a luxury item for a time. And while, Killzone 2 was a good game and sold well enough, you may not find many people impressed enough with it that they’ll fork over a few grand to buy a TV to use it. In essence, Sony may be shrinking the game’s audience when it should be trying to expand it. 3D TV is coming, but it is far from the norm and may even fizzle out depending on whether 3D proves to be something more substantial then the fad many still see it as.
