Link Won’t Fly in Zelda: Skyward Sword

Link has had a wide variety of transportation throughout the Legend of Zelda franchise, from rafts, to horses, to even being on a boat (ON A BOAT!). However, he’s never taken wing and flown before – and despite teasing that he would do just that in the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, producer Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that it’s not going to happen.

“I can guarantee he’s not going to be flying around like [Pit from] Kid Icarus!” said Aonuma in an interview with Nintendo Power. The use of flight for the next Zelda was hinted in the game’s first trailer at E3 2010, as well as from the first info of the game’s storyline, where Link comes from a floating world called Skyloft and must travel to Hyrule, the world below, presumably using some sort of levitation to get down there. Aonuma himself even hinted at flight being a key part of the next Zelda – and it still might be.

“Of course, you know, Link does have to travel between Skyloft and the land below, and back and forth, so he’s obviously going to have to do that via some sort of conveyance,” said Aonuma. What could this conveyance be?

Well, while Link sprouting wings is out, some sort of aerial vehicle may be in the cards. While an airship may be a bit too Final Fantasy for some people’s tastes, it may work well with the crew making up some of the game’s traditionally arbitrary characters.

Another possibility is for Link to have a winged animal…a Pegasus version of Epona, perhaps? Already shot down by Aonuma, who said that he “hadn’t thought of that.” It could be another winged animal, however, like a bird.

So what do you think, Kombo faithful? A highly-designed technical machine? An animal? Or some rope?
