The recently released NPD figures have revealed that Electronic Art’s recent football title, Madden 2006 was the greatest selling video game title in the month of August.
Sales of the title amounted to 2.5 million. Software sales for the period totaled $338 million, a slight increase over last year’s amount. Sales of games increased 7 percent from July to August and for the current year figures are up some 9 percent.
In addition, Electronic Arts accounted for 41.3 percent of all software sales for the month. Following in the trail of EA is Nintendo. The companies latest release, Nintendogs represented the second, third, and fifth.
August did not prove to be a lucrative month for all of the industry. Publishers such as Activison, Midway, and THQ all saw monthly decreases in sales. Activision alone saw a ten million gap between July and August sales.
On the hardware front, console sales are up 9% from last year with average growth expected throughout the year. Analysts expect September to be a similarly good month for the industry with several big releases planned. Stick with AMN for continued coverage of the entire game industry.
