A little over a month ago, we got our first glimpse of Mass Effect 2 at this year’s E3. And while the game won’t be released until “early 2010,” BioWare is already hinting at more, more, more. While speaking to Gamerzines, BioWare vice president Greg Zeschuk mentioned that Mass Effect was conceived as a trilogy, but success (read: makin’ teh monies) could compel further installments of the science fiction RPG-Shooter hybrid.
“We’ve said Mass Effect is supposed to be a trilogy,” Zeschuk told Gamerzines, “so you’re going to see at least a third Mass Effect, and even more if everything goes well.”
I certainly want everything to go well for Mass Effect, but let’s just focus on the core trilogy, for now. Does anyone remember Too Human? That was supposed to be a trilogy. I doubt we’ll see any more. And remember Xenosaga? That was supposed to be a… hexology, or something. Well, that never happened. And while Mass Effect (thankfully) stands a better chance than either of those ever did, I’d rather hear less talk from developers about the far-off future of a franchise and hear more talk about the immediate future.
