Merry Christmas to all from the Kombo team! Hopefully everyone out there has gotten some great gaming goodies to enjoy well into the New Year. What is your most memorable gaming-related holiday gift?
For me, that topic can be summed up in seven words: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Growing up, that was the game I anticipated the most. Having chosen the N64 over the PlayStation (and having an accursed one-system-only rule imposed by my parents in effect) meant that many holiday seasons back then were light on gaming goodness. Opening that shiny, golden package on Christmas morning and popping Miyamoto’s carefully crafted masterpiece into my dusty N64 was a magical moment years in the making. To a kid, the constant delays of the title were crushing, especially when the N64’s library was already lacking when compared to the other systems on the market. In my particular case, I was told that I wasn’t allowed to receive new games for Christmas that year…they were prohibitively expensive at the time. Receiving Zelda was an unexpected surprise – the kind of joyous, gleeful moment rivaled only by Ralphie Parker laying eyes on his Legendary Official Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle in the movie A Christmas Story. Miyamoto had delivered the ultimate 3D experience (and the most spirit-crushing water dungeon in existence), and I enjoyed every second of it. Thanks, Mom and Dad. Even if you managed to create a monster in the process…
If anyone out there has an interesting holiday-related gaming story to share, be sure to leave a comment.
