Mr. Keighley Goes to Washington (State): GameTrailers’ Nintendo Special

Last night, GameTrailers TV was at Nintendo of America’s headquarters to check out their upcoming releases for the holiday season, check up on some other releases we’ve heard little about since E3, and chat for a bit with NoA President Reggie Fils-Aime and EAD General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto.

You can check all that out, along with the accompanying footage, here:

For those who can’t (or just don’t want to) view the video, here we have recaps of what was said.

Starting things off, host Geoff Keighley chats with NoA President Reggie Fils-Aime, who is disappointed that he won’t have the opportunity to once again show up Keighley in a little bit of head-to-head Wii competition.

They talk a bit about third-party titles and core gamers, and Reggie expresses disappointment that Dead Space: Extraction had not been marketed more. Here is what Reggie had the following to say, courtesy of GoNintendo:

“On each of our platforms their are over 140 new titles coming as well. There’s going to be just ton’s of software. Here’s what you see in terms of third party. You see games like The Beatles: Rock Band that started out on competitive platforms quite strong, but the holiday season looks to be all Nintendo in terms of what they’re going to be selling. You take a title like Dead Space: Extraction. Really good reviews…we would have liked to have seen some more marketing support to really drive that home. There’s tons of great content out there…absolutely.”

As for there being no core offerings on the Wii…

“For those core gamers that aren’t playing the Wii day-in/day-out, I’m saying look at what you’re missing. They’re missing Dead Space: Extraction…that is a high quality title. Madworld was a good title, The Conduit was a very good title. One of the questions that I keep asking is, for all of those core gamers who cry the blues about the lack of content, there’s been a lot of great content. Open up your wallet and buy some.”

From there, Reggie lays down the gauntlet, as we’ve mentioned, and says that New Super Mario Bros. Wii can outsell Modern Warfare 2 on a single platform (either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, not both combined). He also admits that he is looking forward to Modern Warfare 2 himself.

After a break, we learn that Yoshi is not only capable of holding enemies, weapons, and players in his mouth, but he can also grab Power-Ups that can be spit out to other players.

Another commercial break comes, and Nintendo’s Bill Trinen talks a bit about The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which he reconfirms as a sequel to Phantom Hourglass. The game starts with Link going to his graduation ceremony to complete his training to be an engineer, ending his apprenticeship.

They also reveal that Link and the Phantom will work together in the Tower of Spirits, where special tablets are collected. More of GT and Nintendo’s Spirit Tracks revelations can be seen here, along with new screens, art, and the latest trailer.

From GoNintendo, some further comments about other games seen at E3 are made:

“In terms of the three we highlighted during E3, Sin and Punishment 2 is going to be something that the Nintendo fan can get really excited about. Galaxy 2…what can you say? Mr. Miyamoto himself is very excited about it. He thinks that it adds even more to that great title. And then Other M…that’s another franchise that I’ve personally got great memories of. Back to a side-scrolling Metroid title. …You mention Zelda Wii…we haven’t committed to Zelda for 2010. Miyamoto said that it was tracking for 2010…so we’ll see how that continues to develop.”

Miyamoto brings us up to speed on how Super Mario Galaxy 2 is progressing:

We’re in the middle of finalizing the game with the ideas that we’ve created. Almost entirely new courses…we’ve added some new abilities for Mario, and the goal is to take the system and the gameplay of the original Super Mario Galaxy and turn it into something that’s a little more expanded, and offers a great deal of challenge for people that enjoyed the first game.

Hopefully, it will be the good kind of challenge, and not the “throw your controller” kind.

Fils-Aime adds that we will see SMG2 and Metroid: Other M in 2010, and that Michael Pachter is the only one who believes Wii HD is going to happen, but that it is not coming.

Finally, he notes that he has not seen the Vitality Sensor since E3 earlier this year, and that we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out more about it.

And that’s pretty much it. Not bad for a half-hour show with commercials, all said.
