My Sony PlayStation 2014 wish list

It's 2014 — a fresh start for all. Even more so now that the end of 2013 saw the beginning of a new generation of gaming. The PlayStation 4 is among us and with that comes an opportunity for Sony to, once again, reclaim its crown atop the gaming throne (though some would argue it never lost it). With that, I've got a few demands/wishes for Sony in 2014.

An official YouTube App on PS4

Much to my displeasure, the PlayStation 4 launched without an official YouTube app, meaning the only way to really view YouTube videos was through the console's built-in browser. Over time users found an alternate way to view YouTube on the PS4; by going to "Youtube.com/tv" you get what is basically the same layout as you'd find on the Xbox One app. Still, one of my wishes for 2014 is an official app so that I don't have to use this workaround. While we're at it, YouTube streaming and uploading would be nice as well. All of this may not be in Sony's control entirely, but I think they can find a way to make this happen.

MP3, DLNA, and wireless headset Support on PS4

Another one of my reasons "why the PS4 is an incomplete system," the lack of MP3 and DLNA was inexcusable for the launch. We're almost two months into the PS4's young lifecycle and we've yet to hear much about this, though Sony promised they'd look into it. Not being able to play MP3s isn't the end of the world for me, but it's an annoyance that I'd like to see fixed in 2014 — hopefully sooner rather than later.

Another wish I've seen is for support for Sony branded wireless headsets on the PS4, specifically the Pulse series. This isn't necessarily a problem for me as I actually like the mono earbud that comes with the PS4, but I've seen numerous complaints about the lack of wireless headset support.

Bring the PS Vita TV over to America

Announced in September 2013, the PlayStation Vita TV is a small device that allows you to play the Vita's games on your television with the use of the DualShock 3 controller. It has other entertainment functions like Hulu as well, but this handheld gaming on the TV is what caught my eye. Unfortunately, it is available only in Japan and while there's talk of bringing it over to America, we've heard nothing really concrete yet. I'd like to see some sort of formal announcement or even its release sometime in 2014.

Another price cut for the Vita

2013 saw a price cut for the struggling Vita. The lowered price plus the launch of the PS4 saw increased sales for the Vita, but when it came down for me to make my ultimate decision — 3DS or Vita — I went with Nintendo's handheld.

Truth be told, I'm a cheapskate and my decision came down to price. $149.99 for a 3DS XL plus the 5% discount for being a Target Redcard member just couldn't be beat. Nintendo's impressive lineup of handheld games didn't hurt either. The Vita had some pretty attractive sales this holiday season as well, but it just wasn't at a price I was comfortable with. Looking ahead, it's expected that Sony will bundle the PS4 and the Vita (thanks to Remote Play) and while I already have a PS4, this could mean even more affordable Vita systems on the market. I'll probably get one this year, for what it's worth.

The continuation of awesome deals for PlayStation Plus

This is one of my wishes that I can pretty much guarantee will come true. 2014 is off to a good start with January's PS Plus offerings consisting of BioShock Infinite, DMC Devil May Cry, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for PlayStation 3 alone. PS4 owners, meanwhile, will say goodbye to Contrast and welcome in another indie title, Don't Starve. It's not the blockbusters we're used to seeing with the PS3, but it's a solid game and the best we can expect for such a young console. Looking ahead the PS4 will see games like Driveclub and Outlast go free with PS Plus, so there's plenty to be excited about.

My list of wishes can honestly go on forever, but I think these are a few reasonable to-dos for Sony. There's plenty more I'd like to see done in 2014, but I'll open it up to all of you for some suggestions. What are some of your wishes for Sony in 2014?
