New Super Mario Bros. Wii is Eighth Best Selling Mario in Japan

Over on the NeoGAF, user Michan has been keeping his eyes on the performance of New Super Mario Bros. Wii since it rolled off the assembly line in Japan, and updating an amusing visual chart of its progress as it goes.

The top graph shown reveals how the game performed one week after its release, wherein it handily toppled the first two Super Mario Advance titles. As time has moved forward to the most recent fourth week of sales, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64 DS, Famicom Mini Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, and Super Mario All-Stars have all been bested (check out the intervening weeks to see NSMBWii knocking the other Marios out of the way).

So that’s half the top fifteen conquered by the Mario Bros. and their two Toad pals. In addition, all of the 3D Marios have been surpassed, including the one that didn’t even make the list, Super Mario Sunshine.

Nintendo likes to have its games perform with a “long tail,” and in North America, the game has frequently sold out at various retailers. So the question is, how high can it climb?

I’ve little doubt it will best Japan’s Super Mario Bros. 2, better known to some here as The Lost Levels, as well as Super Mario Land 2. Super Mario World is where it starts to get difficult, though. But can it possibly reach the heights of its DS predecessor?

Of course, an even greater question would be how it is performing against its brethren in worldwide sales.
