Nintendo Cautions Retail over Unofficial Wii Bundles

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says the company is upset with retailers who are selling the unofficial Wii system software bundles – especially when they are doing so in order to mark up the price.

Being the holiday season and all, it isn’t too far-fetched for retailers to be tempted to bundle Wii systems with software titles and sell them at a higher price (though it is uncommon to find Wii systems, anywhere), but Fils-Aime believes this hurts the inherent low system cost of the Wii in comparison to Sony and Microsoft’s products.

“Retailers have already been given feedback that we are not big fans of that,” Fils-Aime commented to Reuters. We think it masks some of the price advantage we have versus our competition and, frankly, the consumer should decide what they want.”

Reggie made it clear that Nintendo doesn’t want to get into a spat with any particular retailer as of yet, but he asserted that Nintendo does have a good bit of leverage in the situation.

“We don’t have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now. We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers.”

This will all probably calm down after the holidays, but for the time being retailers, consider yourselves warned. Keep it here for more news.
