Nintendo Expected Competition to Introduce Motion Controls Sooner, But Aren’t Standing Around Wa

Recently, the Times Online conducted an interview with Nintendo Company Ltd. President Satoru Iwata which takes a look back at his career, from his humble beginnings at HAL Labs to his rise to the office which he now holds.

Following an explanation of the path Nintendo has chosen to take in order to expand the market, the Times asks of the competition, who at E3 last week revealed their new motion control interfaces which are widely-regarded as answers to Nintendo’s Wii success. And as many have long suspected, Iwata, like them, thought the competition would bring forth their answers sooner.

“To tell the truth,” he says, “I expected them to come up with stuff like this last year. So in my mind they’re later than expected.”

The Times then reports Iwata pausing, “then opens his arms outstretched, with a huge grin on his face,” before saying “I’d like to say to them, ‘Welcome to the motion-control world!'”

He continues, “We are happy that it is now becoming an industry standard. However, we still have no idea about when their products will be available, or how much they will cost, or what sort of software they will be used with.”

“So, I am not in a position to judge whether they are a threat or not. And they should bear in mind that over the next year Nintendo will not be standing still. We’re always at work on something new. I am actually looking forward to engaging in that sort of competition, because it gives our whole industry the chance to expand the gaming population.”

Indeed, that competition should prove itself most interesting in the years to come.
