Opera Software, a Norwegian based developer of internet browsers has recently come to terms with Nintendo to provide DS users with the ability to surf the internet using the company’s popular web browser. The Advanced Media Network has reported on the existence of the product earlier today, but conclusive details pertaining to the browser have only recently been revealed.
The Opera DS browser will be sold as a standard Nintendo DS cartridge, and will be inserted into the system in the same fashion as traditional games for the device.
“The incredibly popular Nintendo DS is already Wi-Fi enabled to support real time gaming, so adding Web browsing capabilities was a natural evolution for this device,” says Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Opera Software. “Gaming devices are growing more advanced and a great Web experience is becoming a product differentiator for gaming manufacturers. Opera is excited to work with Nintendo to deliver a unique dual screen, full Internet experience on Nintendo DS.”
To utilize the browser, users simply insert the card into the DS, and connect to an existing wireless network. The internet browser is set to utilize both screens of the portable to allow users to easily visit websites of their choice. The upcoming product will be equipped with an on-screen keyboard on the system’s touch screen when the user prompts the device to input text, and will also provide PDA-like functionality to adjust the viewing area present on the system’s bottom screen.
“Within just five seconds of turning on the system, the Nintendo DS is already fully operational. This makes it the ideal device to enable people to swiftly obtain the latest information from the internet, wherever they are,” says Masaru Shimomura, Deputy General Manager of Nintendo’s R & D Department. “Opera exceeded our expectations with its user friendly interface, quick access to all your favorite sites, ease of use and, most importantly, in making the best use of the Nintendo DS system’s unique double screens and touch screen features. Opera is an important partner for Nintendo in our efforts to further expand the users of the Nintendo DS.”
Despite the official confirmations of the product from both Nintendo and Opera, a definitive release date for the internet browser has yet to be revealed. However at their recent press conference, Nintendo has identified that the product will retail at a price of 3800 yen in Japan, roughly $32.
