PaRappa Developer Says DS’s Software Bubble has Burst

Masaya Matsuura, known for his work on the rhythm based ‘PaRappa the Rapper’ has some interesting views on the subject of the DS’s success.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Gamasutra, Matsuura stated, “Some people have said already that the DS software’s bubble has burst. [One company I know has] some kind of learning type of game. The first one sold over 200,000, but the second one is 8,000. So these kind of things are going to happen.”

He further concedes that the Japanese market is still very old-fashioned, and doesn’t always take to new ideas as easily as developers sometimes hope. “Many people know that the DS has very unique titles, like Brain Training, or something like that, but it’s not for younger-aged market,” he went on. “It’s kind of older people, like me. So, about the young aged market: still very conservative. So these kinds of things are very important for us.”
